Michael Teoh Su Lim
Malaysian
I am mute without the voices of the youths. I am deaf without the ideas of my peers. I will not be here without the Environment and Support that you have given me. Yes, You! The best things about me is You. Knowing that i have the support, a network, a platform to amplify our Ideas, it is the Best Thing about Me – My Passion to Ensure that this platform is used to Represent Our Collective Voices. Our Ideas Are To Be Heard Of, I Know because I am A Youth Like You Too.
‘Youths should never underestimate themselves in changing the world.’
‘Small incremental steps, account to the success or failure of a person in life.’
I made sure those two principles represent what i advocate and champion for the youths. Why my burning passion and commitment to see youths succeed? On a selfish note, because i want to be associated with a bunch of really successful young people like you! On a more personal note, i believe, in running any sort of business, projects or opportunities, the country, the region, the world would benefit from a pool of talented and driven young leaders that can make THAT Change for the Better happen!
I am Michael Teoh, and i was born into an average family in the island of Penang, Malaysia. My parents run a tuition-centre that runs social education programmes for the Poor in Penang. Their hearts touched me, as we may not be living in a big house with new cars, or me getting a new handphone or toys, i saw that my parents were thinking for the younger generation – Empowering them with Education.
I grew in a normal high school but led a rather miserable life. I was ridiculed and ditched by friends because i was weak in sports, and often made fun of because of my timid nature to speak out. Well, that was the time when I WOKE UP!
Since college, i have dared myself to take up leadership roles, exploring responsibilities which were once alien to me. My big break was becoming my college’s Student Council President – Realising the importance of Fighting for the Rights of 8,000 students in campus. I learned to balance my Respect, Promises and Represent the Voices of Many, from diverse Cultures, Understandings and Perspectives. Again, who am i, if they never gave me their ‘Voices’ to be Shouted-Out?
My late grandfather worked as a clerk and all he did in his life was, Saving up money to fund my education overseas. He passed away before he could see me fly off to New Zealand for my tertiary education in business.
Arriving in New Zealand, i knew i had to make a mark for us Malaysians. Guided with Passion and a Mindset to Challenge, i was assisted by lecturers, comrades, friends and families, who did not see me as the ‘Lonely Student’ from Malaysia. Rather they saw me as an ‘Achiever’ who was willing to sacrifice time and holidays to Contribute! Hence they gave me my Accomplishments today.
Winner of global business and innovation competitions, representative of the country to global leaders meeting, a Harvard Invitee, a World Class New Zealand Awards Invitee and others. Yet as far as these accomplishments marveled the imagination- I was nothing, without THEM. They guided me, You guided me, in the process of championing those Challenges.
Being back in Malaysia, opportunities began to grow, until i was awarded 1 of the 7 of Malaysia’s Most Outstanding Youth. In a speech, i said, ‘Achievements are Nothing If It Was To Be Kept. Achievements Are Meant to Be Used, so that You Can Represent the Voices of The Masses, To Get the Ears of the Leaders High Up!’
Accomplishments are the Rewards for my hardwork and undying spirit to excel. However, why should i be limiting myself to this? I want to use this track-record to represent you, with your Blessings and Confidence, to Collect Your Voices and Change the World!
Yes, i am confident, that i will represent all of us well into One Young World! Because i know how it feels like to be left behind, to be ignored, to be shattered and to be dismissed because of our young age.
They should realise that We Too Have Our Ideas That Are Changing the World! We only need someone or a platform to Amplify Them.
I Volunteer to That ‘Change’ For You All.
Please Help Me. Our Collective Voices!
Thank you for reading – I know it is long. Thank you so much.
